THE DUBAWNT RIVER

These pictures taken in 2004 will give an impression of the river.

All Photographs by Barbara Burton

The Older I get (Age 66) and the more bionic I become (New Knee and a Pace Maker) the more challenging my trips seem to appear. With my wife Barbara Burton and four friends. Hugh Westheuser from Kelowna, Ron Bruch from Hamilton, Iva Kinclova and Charles McLandress both from Toronto, planned a six week 1000 km canoe trip from Wholdaia Lake on the Dubawnt & Thelon Rivers to Baker Lake. We had great help from Bill Layman and Lynda Holland of La Ronge in Saskatchewan. This on a personal level as well as through the internet.
We started our expedition on 1st July 2004 and arrived in Baker Lake on the 14th August 2004.
Nova Craft Canoe also give us great assistance with their new 17' Prospector Blue Steel
We packed all our food for the six weeks and were not resupplied at any point along the way. For emergencies we had a Globalstar Satellite Phone and a VHF Air Transciever with us. We took close to 2500 digital images during the expedition and will shortly have images and reports on the river and how the Blue Steel canoes performed. Our experience paddling them is that they are a beautiful canoe to handle.
When we arrived in Baker Lake the Canoes were stored by the owner of Baker Lake Lodge for our return in 2005 to complete our Journey to the Arctic Sea via the Back River.
