Wakwayowkastic River
Ontario

The Wakwayowkastic River is a 230 km remote river located in north-eastern Ontario, used by the area First Nations People for fishing, trapping and hunting throughout their history. Until it joins with the North French River, the Wakwayowkastic River depends on snow melt and rainfall for good canoeing conditions, making it necessary to paddle the river early in the year. Through its first 50 km, the river is a tiny, twisty and log jammed stream. The river then opens up to easier canoeing for the next 50 km. At the 100 km mark, the river begins to drop off the Canadian Shield plateau and the true whitewater fun begins. The next 45 km consists of rapids and waterfalls. Finally, the last 85 km down the North French River and the Moose River is through limestone lowlands with ledgy limestone rapids. It is suggested and advised to allow yourself a minimum of 12 days to paddle this river.
